{"id":420,"date":"2011-09-12T10:56:39","date_gmt":"2011-09-12T08:56:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/borkedcode.com\/wp\/?p=420"},"modified":"2011-09-12T10:56:39","modified_gmt":"2011-09-12T08:56:39","slug":"the-color-of-language","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.borkedcode.com\/wp2\/2011\/09\/12\/the-color-of-language\/","title":{"rendered":"The Color of Language"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A really cool study was done recently, looking into the impact of linguistic definitions of color and how they affect our brains during the development of color vision.<\/p>\n<p>In summary, when we are born, we don\u2019t have color vision \u2013 it takes several months for us to develop color cells and begin to see in color.\u00a0 As we grow up, and begin to learn language, it seems that the linguistic definitions of color <em>actually impacts how our brains develop and \u2018see\u2019 color through our eyes<\/em>.\u00a0 In other words, if you are a native speaker of a language that possesses one word for what we call \u201cblack\u201d, \u201cblue\u201d and \u201cgreen\u201d <em>those colors will appear very similar, if not identical, to one another.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve included below a video clip from a BBC program detailing the study.\u00a0 Wow.\u00a0 Just really wow.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4b71rT9fU-I\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"560\" height=\"345\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A really cool study was done recently, looking into the impact of linguistic definitions of color and how they affect our brains during the development of color vision.
