{"id":803,"date":"2015-07-11T12:52:57","date_gmt":"2015-07-11T10:52:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/borkedcode.com\/wp\/?p=803"},"modified":"2015-07-11T12:52:57","modified_gmt":"2015-07-11T10:52:57","slug":"the-uss-enterprise-refit-from-star-trek-the-motion-picture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.borkedcode.com\/wp2\/2015\/07\/11\/the-uss-enterprise-refit-from-star-trek-the-motion-picture\/","title":{"rendered":"The USS Enterprise (Refit) from Star Trek: The Motion Picture"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Build Log: \u00a0Part 1<\/h2>\n<p>Well, here we go! \u00a0I bought this kit some six or seven years ago when I moved to England, thinking I\u2019d be living alone and have time and space to put it together, but in the end I realized I couldn\u2019t do it justice.\u00a0 So it\u2019s been sitting in my various closets for a long while as I moved around, and until I moved to Hamburg I just didn\u2019t have the space to accomplish the job.<\/p>\n<p>I present: \u00a0the Polar Lights kit #4204, the 1:350th scale USS Enterprise.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_804\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/borkedcode.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Picture-17.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-804\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-804\" src=\"http:\/\/borkedcode.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Picture-17-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"I have to admit, the sheer size of this thing is rather intimidating\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-804\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I have to admit, the sheer size of this thing is rather intimidating<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Well, I\u2019ve got the space now \u2013 and I decided if I can pull off a detailed WW2 model like the E25 or the Priest, it\u2019s time to pull out the stops and do the BIG DOG at last.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll put together an unboxing video shortly, to give you some ideas of what I\u2019m dealing with parts-wise (I think it actually has fewer parts than the Priest kit did, so from an assembly point of view it will probably be easier).\u00a0 In this section I\u2019m going to give you a run-down on what my plans are for how I\u2019ll approach the build, and start talking about the tools and extra accessories I\u2019m going to use.<\/p>\n<p>First \u2013 the plan:<\/p>\n<p>My goal is to make this the 1701 using the lighting plan from &#8220;Wrath of Khan&#8221;, and as much good detail as I can yank from &#8220;The Motion Picture.&#8221; \u00a0I\u2019m will treat\u00a0this as several separate model kits, each one with its own needs, and then put all the parts together to make the master assembly.\u00a0 Those parts will be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">shuttle bay<\/span> \u2013 including shuttles, work pods, lighting, etc.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">arboretum<\/span> \u2013 very lightweight effort, not a lot of cutting needed, but it\u2019ll get dressing similar to how I do my bases for \u201cFlames of War\u201d infantry, so it\u2019ll look nice<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">warp engines<\/span> \u2013 I\u2019ve got some underbody lighting kits for automobiles that generate UV \/ Purple, so I\u2019ll see if those will work as light sources for the warp engines; if not, I\u2019ll have to source out some purple LED tape. Also some floodlights, and anti-collision strobes, so in the end there will be three separate circuits leading into these (warp on\/off, anti-collision timer, and main power on\/off)<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">main deflector<\/span> \u2013 mostly this is going to be about getting the lighting right, with warp on and impulse on changes between amber and blue<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">neck and torpedo launcher<\/span> \u2013 still not sure if I\u2019m going to include a torp-launch cycle here, but the neck overall will need attention to get the interior lighting right and to make sure it can support the full weight of the saucer<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">officer\u2019s lounge<\/span> \u2013 this will be a small sub-assembly that is seen through the windows behind the bridge; it\u2019ll need lighting and dressing<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">rec deck<\/span> \u2013 similar to the o\u2019lounge<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">saucer with impulse engines<\/span> \u2013 big and from what I\u2019ve seen has some fit issues, so there\u2019ll be a lot of putty-sand-putty-sand, etc. Also, several lighting schemes will be needed here \u2013 main power for the interior window-lighting, navigational lights cycling, impulse engine on\/off, and anti-collision strobes too<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">secondary hull<\/span> \u2013 this is where everything will come together, and will need its own circuits for main power (interior lighting), and anti-collision strobes; this one is going to have a tight fit for some parts, and as well will need some shaving away for photo-etch stuff; it will also need some reinforcing on the connector where the main rod connects to the base \u2013 there\u2019ll be a lot of weight here, and I don\u2019t want just a single plastic plate being the load-bearing spot<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">base<\/span> \u2013 the ship will sit on this, and I intend to run the four circuits down into it to enable me to control them from the base; the circuit control board will live in here<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">circuit board<\/span> \u2013 this is going to be a big first for me, I\u2019m going to build the control circuit board myself, using either an Arduino board or, perhaps, using an Arduino board to program an ATTiny chip which I will then solder into a separate board to control the various on-off-fade circuits, and possibly to put in an MP3 player with speakers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I\u2019ve already started chewing into the shuttle bay and arboretum, so I\u2019ll drop in some pics of that after the unboxing video.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/borkedcode.com\/wp\/?p=808\">Part 2 of the build log can be found here.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Build Log: \u00a0Part 1 Well, here we go! \u00a0I bought this kit some six or seven years ago when I moved to England, thinking I\u2019d be living alone and have time and space to put it together, but in the &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.borkedcode.com\/wp2\/2015\/07\/11\/the-uss-enterprise-refit-from-star-trek-the-motion-picture\/\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[35,16,24],"tags":[105,112,126,138],"class_list":["post-803","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-build-log","category-model-kits","category-sci-fi","tag-model-kit","tag-polar-lights","tag-star-trek","tag-uss-enterprise"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.borkedcode.com\/wp2\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/803","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.borkedcode.com\/wp2\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.borkedcode.com\/wp2\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.borkedcode.com\/wp2\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.borkedcode.com\/wp2\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=803"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.borkedcode.com\/wp2\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/803\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.borkedcode.com\/wp2\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=803"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.borkedcode.com\/wp2\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=803"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.borkedcode.com\/wp2\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=803"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
