{"id":808,"date":"2015-07-11T18:25:47","date_gmt":"2015-07-11T16:25:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/borkedcode.com\/wp\/?p=808"},"modified":"2015-07-11T18:25:47","modified_gmt":"2015-07-11T16:25:47","slug":"the-uss-enterprise-refit-from-star-trek-the-motion-picture-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.borkedcode.com\/wp2\/2015\/07\/11\/the-uss-enterprise-refit-from-star-trek-the-motion-picture-2\/","title":{"rendered":"The USS Enterprise (Refit) from Star Trek: The Motion Picture"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Build Log: \u00a0Part 2<\/h2>\n<p>I\u2019m beginning, as mentioned before, with the shuttle bay and arboretum, and this is a short tack-on from part 1, detailing a little bit about some of the tools and accessories I\u2019ll use here.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_810\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/borkedcode.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/PE1-resized.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-810\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-810\" src=\"http:\/\/borkedcode.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/PE1-resized-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"The primary PE card\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-810\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The primary PE card<\/p><\/div>\n<p>First off \u2013 two primary accessories for the kit are going to be photo-etch kits from Paragrafix, part # PGX111 and PGX166 from them (see photos).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Previously in my E25 build I used cyanoacrylate glue (commonly known as super-glue, or CA glue) to fix brass parts to the plastic.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to switch to canopy glue for this build for most of that,\u00a0for a couple of reasons:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_811\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/borkedcode.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/PE2-Resized.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-811\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-811\" src=\"http:\/\/borkedcode.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/PE2-Resized-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Secondary PE Card\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-811\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Secondary PE Card<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_812\" style=\"width: 179px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/borkedcode.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Canopy-Glue.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-812\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-812\" src=\"http:\/\/borkedcode.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Canopy-Glue-169x300.jpg\" alt=\"Most model shops carry this stuff. \" width=\"169\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-812\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Most model shops carry this stuff.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>1 \u2013 CA glue sticks like hell to everything, including my fingers, and for small brass parts, that just isn\u2019t workable.\u00a0 Even for big brass parts.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want my fingerprints all over this damn thing needing to be sanded away.\u00a0 Canopy glue, on the other hand, does cling, but because it sets more slowly, it\u2019s easier to get off of things.<\/p>\n<p>2 \u2013 CA glue is also very thin, and has a tendency to run exactly where you don\u2019t want it.\u00a0 Canopy glue is more viscous and has a tendency to stay where it\u2019s put.<\/p>\n<p>3 \u2013 CA glue can be rather brittle when dry, and doesn\u2019t like to stick to itself, requiring extensive chipping out and re-application if something does go badly wrong.\u00a0 Canopy glue is happier sticking to itself, and can be peeled away pretty easily if it needs to be removed.<\/p>\n<p>4 \u2013 CA glue isn\u2019t soluble in anything other than alien blood molecular acid, to my knowledge.\u00a0 Canopy glue cleans up and dilutes with water.\u00a0 It\u2019s basically a really fine version of regular old school white glue, with the added bonus that it dries totally clear like glass.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_813\" style=\"width: 179px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/borkedcode.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Tools.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-813\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-813\" src=\"http:\/\/borkedcode.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Tools-169x300.jpg\" alt=\"Left to right - hobby chisel, saw, and two pin vices\" width=\"169\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-813\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Left to right &#8211; hobby chisel, saw, and two pin vices<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I\u2019ll also be using a couple of pin-vices (they\u2019re called a pin vice because just like a normal vice clamps down to hold things, a pin vice clamps down to hold \u2013 wait for it \u2013 pins and needles and things like drill bits).\u00a0 These are basically little hand-held drills.<\/p>\n<p>A small hand-held saw will also be in play for cutting out sections of the plastic, as will a commonplace Xacto razor knife and a fine-point chisel.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s get the necessaries over with in advance\u2026<\/p>\n<p>WARNING:<br \/>\nRazor knives can chop off parts of your hands and fingers that you\u2019d rather keep.\u00a0 Always cut away from your body with them.\u00a0 NEVER hold them close to your eyes.\u00a0 Most of the tools and glues and paints I\u2019m going to talk about here can cause you severe distress, and in some cases permanent maiming or death (which will always be permanent) if misused.\u00a0 Pin vices and chisels can punch holes in things that shouldn\u2019t have holes in them.\u00a0 Saws can cause very ragged, very painful, cuts.<\/p>\n<p>And if that isn\u2019t enough warning, your model kit will take some serious cleaning up if you get blood all over the damn thing, so be careful.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_814\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/borkedcode.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Shuttlebay-wall-before.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-814\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-814\" src=\"http:\/\/borkedcode.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Shuttlebay-wall-before-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Note the eight windows in the middle\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-814\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Note the eight windows in the middle<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Here\u2019s a sample of what I\u2019ve begun \u2013 see the \u201cBefore\u201d section of the side wall of the shuttle bay.\u00a0 See those eight\u00a0windows all lined up (two sets of four)?\u00a0 I\u2019ve got a photo-etch piece that\u2019s going to go over that, and I\u2019ll have lighting behind it to flood the bay with.\u00a0 So, this plastic\u2019s gotta go.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll drill a few holes in above and below the windows (leaving some space to attach the PE part), and then will saw the rest of the way through.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_815\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/borkedcode.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Shuttlebay-wall-after.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-815\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-815\" src=\"http:\/\/borkedcode.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Shuttlebay-wall-after-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"I'll shave off the various scraps, but it doesn't have to be perfect, since it'll be obscured by the PE part.\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-815\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I&#8217;ll shave off the various scraps, but it doesn&#8217;t have to be perfect, since it&#8217;ll be obscured by the PE part.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Here\u2019s the after shot.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll start attaching the other shuttle bay PE parts (most of which don\u2019t require sawing or cutting) shortly, and then prime the bay.\u00a0 Photos will be attached below in a future edit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/borkedcode.com\/wp\/?p=803\">USS Enterprise build log part 1<\/a>;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/borkedcode.com\/wp\/?p=820\">USS Enterprise build log part 3<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Build Log: \u00a0Part 2 I\u2019m beginning, as mentioned before, with the shuttle bay and arboretum, and this is a short tack-on from part 1, detailing a little bit about some of the tools and accessories I\u2019ll use here.
